Gematria cheat sheet

Every letter's value in every cipher this site supports, and the rule that produces each one. Built from the same engine as the calculator, so the numbers here and the numbers there cannot disagree.

How each cipher is built

The four highlighted ciphers are the core set — they carry almost every decode on the site. The rest are supported for cross-checking a value that does not land in the core four.

Ordinal

A = 1 through Z = 26, straight down the alphabet.

Reduction

Ordinal, then reduced to a single digit by summing digits (so K = 11 becomes 2). The base cipher for most decodes.

Rev Ordinal

The alphabet backwards: A = 26 down to Z = 1.

Rev Reduction

Reverse Ordinal, reduced to a single digit the same way.

Latin

Roman-numeral values extended across the alphabet, so a handful of letters carry very large values and dominate a word's total.

Chaldean

The Chaldean 1-8 assignment, which groups letters by sound rather than by position, and never uses 9.

Sumerian

Ordinal multiplied by six, so every value is a multiple of 6.

ASCII

The letter's ASCII code point: A = 65 through Z = 90.

Jewish

The Latin/Agrippa values as used in the English Jewish cipher. In this engine it is identical to Latin for every letter, so treat a match in both as one result, not two.

Using a cheat sheet without fooling yourself

A cipher is a convention, not a discovery: it assigns numbers to letters and nothing more. A shared value between a name and a date is a relationship worth looking into, not evidence that one caused the other. The reason this page lists nine ciphers is that a value can be found in almost anything if you keep changing the rule until it appears, so the honest practice is to fix the cipher and the spelling before looking, and to record both alongside any match you keep.

Work from a full, correctly spelled name where you can. Nicknames, initials and alternate spellings all produce different values, and choosing among them after seeing the numbers is how a coincidence gets manufactured. Once you have a value, the calculator will find names and records that share it, and the daily sport pages show which of those are actually playing today.
