Numerology

Numerology is the practice of assigning meaning to numbers derived from names and dates — most commonly the life path number, which reduces a full birth date to a single digit (or the master numbers 11, 22, 33), and expression or destiny numbers, which reduce the letters of a name. The alphabet it uses is the Pythagorean table: A=1 through I=9, then the cycle repeats for J through R and S through Z.

How a numerology calculation runs

Take a birth date, sum its digits, and keep summing until one digit remains — 27 becomes 9, 1985 collapses to 23 then 5. Name numbers work the same way on letters. The consistent rule is reduction: a numerology answer is nearly always a digit 1–9, which is why two very different people can share a life path and why practitioners treat master numbers as exceptions.

Numerology vs gematria

Gematria is the older and stricter cousin. It does not reduce totals to one digit: "gematria" stays 74 in English Ordinal and 444 in Sumerian, and the full total is the result.
