Gematria Definition
Gematria (noun) is the practice of assigning a numerical value to a letter, word, or phrase according to a stated cipher, so that text can be read as number and numbers can be compared across text. A gematria value is always a property of three things at once: the exact spelling, the cipher, and the counting rules. Omit any of the three and the number means nothing.
Definition in one sentence
Gematria is letter arithmetic: under a given cipher, each letter has a fixed value, the value of a word is the sum of its letters, and two spellings with the same sum are considered numerically equivalent.
Etymology of the word
The English word came through Hebrew gimatria (גימטריה), which was itself borrowed from the Greek geōmetria ("measurement of land", the root of geometry). Greek writers used the parallel practice of isopsephy on their own alphabet, so the borrowed name for a Greek-style counting habit stuck. The word is unrelated to the Hebrew root for "complete", a folk etymology that occasionally circulates.
A worked definition
Take the word gematria itself. Under English Ordinal (a=1 … z=26) it counts 7+5+13+1+20+18+9+1 = 74. Stating the cipher and the spelling is what makes that number reproducible — anyone applying the same rule gets 74.

What a definition does not include
A definition covers the arithmetic, not the interpretation. A shared value is a curiosity worth recording, not proof that two words are "the same" or a prediction that an event will occur. Serious work separates the count from the commentary — the same discipline described in gematria meaning.
Where the practice appears
Letter-number counting shows up in rabbinic commentary on the Hebrew scriptures, in Kabbalistic texts, in Greek isopsephy, and in modern popular culture — sports decodes, news headlines, and music. Each tradition has its own ciphers; the Hebrew variants are covered in Hebrew gematria, and the modern English ciphers in the gematria cheat sheet.
Gematria used in a sentence
"Under ordinal gematria, the word gematria has the definition value 74, the same value as cross and energy." That is the word working exactly as defined: a spelling, a cipher, a sum.
