Simple Gematria

Simple gematria is the most basic English cipher: A=1, B=2, C=3, straight through to Z=26. No digits summed, no reversal, no skipping — just the alphabet counted. Most guides call it English Ordinal (the name comes from ordinal position), and "simple gematria" is the search term people use when they want exactly this table and nothing else.

The letter table

Columns: letter and value. A1 B2 C3 D4 E5 F6 G7 H8 I9 J10 K11 L12 M13 N14 O15 P16 Q17 R18 S19 T20 U21 V22 W23 X24 Y25 Z26. "Gematria" itself: G7 + E5 + M13 + A1 + T20 + R18 + I9 + A1 = 74. Any word's total can be checked by hand in under a minute, which is the cipher's real advantage — it is the one everyone can verify.

Simple gematria and the other ciphers

The plain table is the reference point the other ciphers are defined against. Reduction digit-sums each letter's value (so M13 becomes 4); Reverse Ordinal counts from the other end (A=26 … Z=1); Reverse Reduction combines the two. Latin, Chaldean, Sumerian, ASCII and Jewish (Agrippa) use entirely different tables — the gematria glossary defines each one, and the gematria definition page explains why a total is meaningless without its cipher named.
