English Gematria Calculator

English gematria applies letter-value counting to the 26-letter Latin alphabet. The free calculator on this site computes it in four ciphers — English Ordinal, English Reduction, Reverse Ordinal and Reverse Reduction — and every result includes the letter-by-letter working so the count can be checked by hand.

The four English ciphers

English Ordinal counts a=1 through z=26 — the alphabet's dictionary order, the most common default in modern decoding. English Reduction folds every letter to a single digit (a=1 … i=9, then j=1 again, and so on through r=9, then s=1 … z=8). Reverse Ordinal counts the alphabet from the other end, a=26 through z=1. Reverse Reduction does the same fold on the reversed scale. Every value in every cipher on this site comes from the same engine that powers the calculator and the public API, so a page, a calculator result and an API call always agree.

Worked example: "english"

The word english itself counts e(5) + n(14) + g(7) + l(12) + i(9) + s(19) + h(8) = 74 under English Ordinal — the same value as gematria and Jesus, which is one reason the number 74 gets attention in decode circles. The other ciphers give:

English gematria vs the older traditions

The English ciphers are modern descendants of the Greek isopsephy and Hebrew traditions, where letter-counting had centuries of religious commentary behind it. There is no historical "English gematria" — the ciphers above are conventions adopted by the modern community, which is precisely why stating the cipher matters: the same phrase has a different value in each, and all of them are correct arithmetic.
